Congratulations Crusader Tennis Team!!

The Elk County Catholic Crusaders are this year’s District 9 Class AA boys’ tennis team champions following a 3-2 victory over Punxsutawney in DuBois on Wednesday afternoon.

ECC entered the tournament as the top seed while Punxsutawney was the third seed.

The Crusaders won two out of the three singles matches and one of the two doubles matches en route to the victory. All of the matches were hard fought and very close.

At first singles, ECC’s Anthony Messineo won 4-6, 6-4, 6-2 over the Chucks’ Ben Gigliotti.

At second singles, Punxy’s Zayin Spearing defeated ECC’s

Cameron Klebacha 6-4, 7-6 (8-6).

At third singles, the Crusaders’ Cole Piccirillo won 7-6 (7-4), 6-4 against Punxsy’s Aramy Ferrent.

At first doubles, the Punxsy duo of Josh Shoemaker and Jaugar McDivitt teamed up for a 6-2, 4-6, 7-5 win over the Crusaders’ Owen Daghir and Zach Eckert.

At second doubles, ECC’s Julian Funaki and Elliott Rupprecht won 4-6, 6-3, 6-2 against Punxsy’s Alex Deppen and Michael Setree.

As the District 9 team champion, the Crusaders will advance to the state tournament, where they will take on the third place team out of District 7 on Tuesday, May 17 at a site and time to be announced.
