Today at ECCHS our flag flies at half staff in memory of Edward Meyer.
General Edward Meyer, a native of St. Marys and a 1946 graduate of St. Marys Catholic High School (Central), passed away on October 13. General Meyer lived a tremendous life. He went to West Point, won a national championship with their lacrosse team, and achieved All-American status. In fact, he was captain of the team. (ECC has never had a lacrosse team. He learned how to play at West Point.) He fought with distinction in Korea and Vietnam, and eventually rose to become a general and Chief of Staff of the United States Army.
His life serves as a model in many ways. Certainly, it shows what someone from Elk County can achieve through dedication and hard work. A quote from Edward’s obituary includes, “He loved God, his family, his country, St. Marys, and the U.S. Army.”
ECCSS is fortunate to have worked closely with his brother Jake, an attorney who still lives here in town, and Jake’s wife Mary, who taught at ECC and founded our excellent advancement department. Please keep General Meyer and his family in your thoughts and prayers.
